The incident happened in the harbour area of Nairn A search is under way for a man who was swept away by the River Nairn following a failed rescue attempt.Police responded to a report of a man entering the water in the harbour area of Nairn at 22:56 on Saturday.
When officers arrived, they found two men in the water with one attempting to help the other.
One of the men managed to get out of the river but the other was lost from sight.
An RAF rescue helicopter joined coastguard, lifeboat, ambulance and fire service crews in a search for the missing male, but no trace of him has yet been found.
A spokesman for Police Scotland said: "Searches for the remaining male are continuing. Details of those involved are being withheld until next of kin have been informed. Inquiries into this incident are ongoing."
